The new lychee variety Jumeiren introduced today is a typical representative of the new high-quality lychee varieties cultivated by the lychee science and technology innovation team of our school. Professor Hu Guibing, head of the Jumeiren R&D team and dean of the School of Horticulture, took the stage to introduce the breeding process, main characteristics and development ideas of the new Jumeiren lychee variety. Since the 1980s, my country's lychee industry has developed rapidly and the scale of the industry has expanded rapidly. Litchi has entered the homes of ordinary people and has become a popular fruit on the market. However, while the lychee industry is developing rapidly, it also faces many problems, the most prominent of which is the single variety structure. The proportion of high-quality varieties is low, and the low-efficiency varieties such as Heiye and Huaizhi are seriously homogenized, the production period is short and concentrated, and the industrial benefits are low, which seriously affects the economic benefits of lychee cultivation.

In order to solve this problem, Professor Hu Guibing's team has cultivated new varieties with high quality (extra large fruit), early fruiting, high yield and stable yield through hybrid breeding to meet industrial and consumer demand and promote the high-quality development of the lychee industry. In 2008, the lychee breeding research group of the School of Horticulture, South China Agricultural University conducted artificial sexual crosses with Ziniangxi as the female parent and Wunu Li as the male parent in the campus breeding base, and obtained 69 hybrids. In April 2010, the seedlings were numbered and planted in the breeding base of the research group in Yangxi, Guangdong. The first batch of seedlings began to bear fruit in 2012 (8 in 2012, 15 in 2013, and 37 in 2014). Among them, the plant numbered ZW055 bloomed for the first time in 2014, and its comprehensive traits were the best in the ZW population. Since 2015, the scientific research team has successively taken scions from the mother plant, and carried out multi-point regional experiments in Yangjiang, Zhanjiang, Guangzhou and other places by means of high seeding, and began to bear fruit in 2017. Through years of observation, the ZW055 line has basically stable performance, and this new line is initially named Jumeiren.In 2020, the secretariat of the National Expert Committee on Major Scientific Research on Improved Litchi Breeds organized relevant experts to conduct on-site evaluation of Jumeiren (No. ZW005), and fully affirmed the variety. The expert group believes that Jumeiren is a new line selected from the hybrid population created by artificial sexual hybridization. It has extra-large fruit, early fruiting, high yield and high coke rate. It provides variety selection for the development of characteristic lychee industry, and has great potential for promotion and application. In 2022, the first batch of giant beauties will be officially launched and sold in limited quantities, with an estimated output of 7,000 catties.

Hu Guibing said that Jumeiren will adopt the method of regional authorization of variety rights, cooperate with relevant enterprises, demonstrate and promote in a planned and step-by-step manner, and develop in an appropriate scale. The signing ceremony for the authorization of the new Jumeiren lychee variety and the pre-sale launch ceremony were held at the event site.
