Horticulture Student Volunteers in Action

This year is destined to be an extraordinary year. At the beginning of the Year of the Rat, we faced the severe test brought about by the new coronavirus. General Secretary Xi Jinping instructed: Party committees, governments and relevant departments at all levels should put the people’s lives and health in the first place, formulate a thorough plan, organize all parties to carry out prevention and control, take practical and effective measures to restrain the spread of the epidemic.

As an ordinary citizen, obeying arrangements to stay at home and taking good protection measures is the greatest help to the country. As young people in the new era, they have also begun to shoulder their own responsibilities. Whether the young medical workers or the army, they are writing their own new generation of responsibility in their own way. As a member of the Communist Party of China, Xu Hairong, a 2016 undergraduate student in horticulture at the College of Horticulture, took the initiative to sign up for the prevention and control of the outbreak of young volunteers in her hometown. They conduct temperature testing and crowd evacuation in the vegetable market where crowds gather on weekdays; they carry out household information collection and epidemic investigation work from house to house, and complete the information collection work of more than 370 households in the volunteer service process.

In the face of a sudden outbreak, the time and content of volunteer service can only be moved randomly. Wherever you need support, no matter whether it is at the entrance of the vegetable market at 8 in the morning or in the small alley of 10 at night, this group of volunteers are serving from day to night. In the process of volunteer service, volunteers found that the number of people who went out of the village and community decreased, the people who bought and sold vegetables in the whole market were gradually sparse, many people increased their awareness of prevention and put on masks, and some people who went out also consciously to isolation observation. The nervousness at the beginning of the work also turned into relief and pride. What is gratifying is that at the end of the volunteer service, there were no confirmed cases in the district where the volunteers are located.

As Mr. Lu Xun said, there is a bit of heat and a spot of light. In the face of the epidemic, volunteers said: Participating in volunteer activities is to hope that the small fireflies can also illuminate others. All we have to do is believe, believe the party, and believe the country. The more difficult times, the more the unity of the Chinese nation can be manifested, and the more young people can be inspired. I believe that after the wind and rain, the sun will always overcome the epidemic and enjoy the cherry blossoms in Wuhan.
